Founded in 1981, Karen Millen, along with Kevin Stanford, started it off by manufacturing and selling white t-shirts to their friends with just a starting capital of £100 which they obtained through a loan. They were later opened their first store in Kent in the year 1983 and established branches in Tunbridge Wells, Brighton, Guildford and London. Following years of successful operations, it has globally expanded to some parts in Europe, Russia, Asia and Australia. In the year 2004, it was acquired by Mosaic Fashions. Unfortunately, five years after, Mosaic Fashions was forced to close shop. Hence, Karen Millen now operates under Aurora Fashions.
In 2006, Gemma Metheringham sat as creative director of the company where she had twelve designers under her wing who were supposed to work on the clothing and lingerie line. By March 2011, the company announced that it would be operating independently on its own, with Derek Lovelock leading the company, in collaboration with Gemma Metheringham and Steve Price.
